Applied Degree Programs

The applied degree credential was developed in response to new educational requirements which have resulted from our changing economy. Applied degree programs are offered by public colleges and technical institutes in subject areas where there is demonstrated labour market demand for programs that are more extensive than two-year diploma programs. The outcomes and structure of applied degree programs, however, are significantly different from university degree programs. The focus of applied degree programs is on advanced study in career or technical fields, and the programs include six semesters of instruction and two semesters of work experience. The academic and work experience components are geared toward the attainment of clearly identified, employment-focused competencies.

Applied degree programs are an extension of the traditional mandate of public colleges and technical institutes, which is to prepare Albertans for a variety of skilled careers, primarily through one-year certificate and two-year diploma programs. These programs are still seen as the core business of these institutions and remain highly valued in the system.
