Advanced Education and Technology 2008-09 program expense will be $3.1 billion, this includes:

$2.65 billion for operating support, an increase of $88 million, or 3.4% from
the 2008-09 forecast, and
$484 million in capital support.

In 2009-10 support for adult learning will increase by $124 million to over $2.1 billion. This increase supports a 6% increase in base operating grants and brings the total increase in base operating grants in the past five years to 34%.

Budget 2009 provides a total of $104 million this year for innovation, research and technology commercialization initiatives, plus $76 million to support apprenticeship technical training. The government will maintain the 7,000 apprenticeship technical training seats that have been added since 2006-07 in response to increased apprenticeship registrations.

Advanced Education and Technology’s 2009-12 business plan focuses on building and strengthening Alberta’s advanced learning and research and innovation systems to develop the next generation economy with a culture of learning and entrepreneurship that creates opportunities for all Albertans.
