Alberta Centennial Scholarship continues longstanding tradition of helping students financially
Edmonton... The Alberta government will spend $48 million on provincially funded scholarships in 2005-06, providing more than 30,000 students with access to one of the most generous scholarship programs in the country.
Premier Ralph Klein's November 21 announcement that Alberta will create a nation-wide scholarship program for Canadians, including Alberta students, underscores the province's tradition of helping students.
"Our province has made post-secondary scholarships a high priority for more than 25 years," said Advanced Education and Technology Minister Dave Hancock.
"The Alberta government funds over 50 scholarship programs for Albertans.
We have always been a province that believes in investing in higher learning, and the decision to create a nation-wide scholarship program for Canadians continues this long-standing tradition."
In the past five years, both the amount of scholarship funding available in Alberta and the number of Albertans receiving scholarships have doubled.
More than $23 million was awarded to 14,000 students in 2000-01.
The new Alberta Centennial Scholarships Program, announced yesterday, will be launched in 2006 and will award 25 scholarships of $2,005 each to every province, including Alberta.
It will be funded by a $20 million endowment.
Among the various scholarships already available to Albertans are: the Alexander Rutherford High School Achievement Scholarship, which provides up to $2,500 to 9,000 high school students; the Jason Lang Scholarship, which provides $1,000 to 15,000 undergraduate students; and the Louise McKinney Post-Secondary Scholarship, which provides 950 post-secondary students with $2,500 each.
