Continuing Education
Alberta Advanced Education and Technology works with the province's 83 Community Adult Learning Councils to provide a range of programs across the province.
Councils offer community-based, non-credit learning opportunities in adult literacy, adult English as a Second Language (ESL), employability enhancement, addressing community issues, as well as other lifelong learning opportunities. Your local Council can also tell you about other adult learning opportunities in your community.
Programs for high school upgrading are also available.
Adult learners can contact career services for career information, educational planning, and employment assistance.
Alberta Advanced Education and Technology's Community Adult Learning Program (CALP) provides opportunities for adults to take part-time learning opportunities through Community Adult Learning Councils and volunteer tutor adult literacy programs. Information on the achievements of Community Adult Learning Councils for 2006 can be found in the 2006 CALP Annual Report.
Family Literacy
The Parent-Child Literacy Strategy was developed to strengthen the adult literacy skills of parents/caregivers, to enhance the early oral language development of their pre-school children, to support and foster the involvement of parents in their children's learning, and to enhance community-based partnerships that support the development of language and literacy skills of families.
The Strategy includes initiatives to raise awareness about the importance of family literacy, training in family literacy and support for family literacy programs in communities across the province.
International Adult Learners' Week
International Adult Learners' Week was created to increase awareness of the importance of lifelong learning and to encourage adults to participate in many types of learning activities.
Literacy
Opportunities to improve literacy skills are available in communities throughout the province.
Alberta Advanced Education and Technology supports Community Adult Learning Councils, which provide part-time adult literacy classes, and 72 Volunteer Tutor Adult Literacy Programs, which match adult learners with a volunteer tutor to assist with improving reading, writing and numeracy skills. Alberta Advanced Education and Technology also funds English Express - a newspaper for adults wanting to improve their English reading skills. Adult learners can now read English Express online.
Information on literacy programs and services offered through the Community Adult Learning Program (CALP) can be found in the 2006 CALP Annual Report.
